Local SEO Checklist: How Texas Service Businesses Get Into the Google Map Pack

The Map Pack is where most local calls come from. Here is the exact checklist we use to help Texas service businesses show up in the top three on Google Maps.

Key takeaways

When someone in Houston searches for “AC repair near me”, the first thing they see is usually not a website. It is the Map Pack: the three business listings shown with a map, star ratings and a call button. For most home service businesses, that small box drives more phone calls than every other part of Google combined.

Google says it ranks local results on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how well known and trusted your business is). You can’t move your office, but you can improve almost everything else. Here is the checklist we work through for every client.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important local SEO asset you own. Most profiles we audit are only half finished.

  • Choose the most specific primary category (for example “HVAC contractor”, not just “Contractor”) and add relevant secondary categories
  • Set your service areas to the cities you actually serve
  • Add every service you offer with a short description
  • Keep hours accurate, including holiday hours
  • Upload real photos of your team, trucks and finished jobs, not stock images

2. Keep your name, address and phone consistent

Google cross-checks your business details across the web. If your phone number or address is different on Yelp, Facebook, the BBB, Apple Maps or Bing Places, it weakens trust. Pick one exact version of your business name, address and phone number (NAP) and use it everywhere. Then list your business in the main directories and the ones specific to your industry.

3. Build real city and service pages

Your website tells Google what you do and where you do it. One generic “Services” page is not enough. Create a dedicated page for each main service and for each major city you serve, with useful local details, not the same text with the city name swapped. You can see how we structure this on our pages for Houston, Dallas and Austin.

4. Earn more genuine Google reviews

Reviews are one of the strongest prominence signals, and they are what customers read before they call. The goal is a steady flow of honest reviews, not a sudden burst.

  • Ask every happy customer, ideally right after the job is done
  • Send a direct review link by text or email so it takes ten seconds
  • Reply to every review, positive or negative, in a calm and helpful way
  • Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them. It breaks Google’s policies and can get reviews removed

5. Post updates and photos regularly

An active profile looks like an active business. Share a quick update or a few job photos every week: a finished install, a seasonal tip, an offer. It keeps your profile fresh and gives customers more reasons to choose you.

6. Make your website fast and mobile-friendly

Most local searches happen on a phone. If your site takes too long to load or the phone number is hard to tap, people go back to Google and call the next company. Compress images, use good hosting, put a click-to-call button at the top of every page, and add LocalBusiness schema markup so Google clearly understands your business details.

7. Earn local links and mentions

Links from other local websites show Google that your business is part of the community. Good sources include your chamber of commerce, local sponsorships, suppliers and manufacturers you work with, trade associations and local news coverage.

8. Track calls, not just rankings

Rankings change by street and by device, so one screenshot doesn’t tell the full story. Track the numbers that pay the bills: calls, direction requests and form leads from your profile and website. Use call tracking and a map-grid rank tracker to see how you show up across your whole service area.

How long does local SEO take?

Quick fixes like completing your profile can help within weeks. Building strong, lasting Map Pack visibility usually takes a few months, and longer in very competitive metros like Houston and Dallas. The businesses that win are the ones that keep at it every month.
